Smelter

Smithies used to be their own smelters, in fact some still are. But as furnaces turned into forges and forges into foundries the types of metals that could be produced also evolved. With the ability to reach increased temperatures and the advent of alloys the complexity of smelting became such that it was more efficient to have someone focus on only the art of refining metals. This improved metal purities which in turn produced finer goods.

While there are three specializations for smelting, they are progressive in nature. So one could say that there are only Smelters who know what they are doing and those that do not. However, while a lower level Smelter cannot forge a steel ingot they can still fashion a chrome one, which a Smithie cannot. As the tradesman or woman learns the trade, they are able to craft more efficient and effective tools.

A low level smelter is known as a Tinsmith. They learn about refining elements from stone and how to mix softer metals. Pewter is the first alloy they learn to craft, which is mostly used for inexpensive trinkets, dishware (known as Sadware) and decorations. However, Pewter has a wide range of uses as it is easy to work and abundant.

Brassfounders are mid-level smelters and are named as such due to the highly favored alloy brass that they produce. They are a Fendersmith's best friend as nearly every musical instrument has some brass in it. Brassfounders also produce many precious metal alloys such as pink gold and white gold. At this stage of a Smelter's profession they are perfecting the craft of separating key minerals from the earth and at what temperatures to mix different alloys.

Blacksmiths are highly sought after for their ability to produce some the most durable metal ingots known. From Mithril to adamantium to Tempered Steel. They use magical tools to extract some of the rarest elements from stone. These master Smelters allow kingdoms to forge the finest armor and arms in the lands.
